Leslie W. Cooke Scholarship


McDonough High School Athletics Boosters will award Four (4) $1,000 non-renewable scholarships to two (2) male and two (2) female athletes, provided the enclosed requirements are complete and accurate.

Minimum Requirements to Apply:

**All requirements must be followed as written to be considered.

  • Must be a McDonough High School senior who lettered in a varsity sport during each of their four (4) years of high school (when possible due to COVID-19).

  • Submit an essay entitled “The Positive Impact of High School ” This essay must be 500 words, typed and single-spaced.

  • Submit the following items in a sealed envelope to Ms. Thornton, Athletic Director postmarked by May 1st, 2021.

  1. A completed, signed and dated application

  2. 500-word essay

  3. Two (2) letters of recommendation from:

    1. Teacher/ counselor

    2. Coach/athletic director/adult community member


Scholarship Requirements:

  1. Must be used within one year of

  2. Must be used for books or tuition only. The scholarship funds will be paid directly to the institution and cannot be exchanged for cash nor transferred to another

  3. Can be used for a two-year or four-year accredited college or technical

Selection of the Scholarship Recipient:

 A committee of community members (with no relationships to McDonough High School) will make the selection of the scholarship recipients. This committee does not include MHS Athletic Booster Members, MHS parents, MHS teachers or administration. Scholarships will be awarded during Senior Awards Night.

 Applicants should turn into the Athletic Director the completed, signed and dated application along with essay and two (2) letters of recommendation to:
